1-OQA+19 · Muhal Richard Abrams recorded this album in November and December 1977 at Generation Sound Studios in New York. It was released on the Italian label Black Saint. Abrams plays piano, synthesizer and voice, and surrounds himself with a quintet of Anthony Braxton, Henry Threadgill, Leonard Jones and Steve McCall.
According to AllMusic, this group made demanding music, harmonically dense and rhythmically unpredictable. Braxton's fast solos are answered by Threadgill's more bluesy lines, while Abrams holds jazz, blues and other sources together. The Penguin Guide called the music intricate and seldom immediately appealing, and the Rolling Stone Jazz Record Guide felt that Abrams had never sounded better as the leader of a small group.
