Madonna

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

In 1982 Madonna was living with Stephen Bray in a vacated rehearsal space in New York, where she made a demo tape of four dance tracks. DJ Mark Kamins played Everybody at the club Danceteria, and Sire Records signed her. Producer Reggie Lucas was brought in for the album, but she was not happy with his work. She therefore brought in her then boyfriend John Jellybean Benitez to produce and mix the rest. The sound is dance-pop and post-disco, with modern equipment such as the LinnDrum, Moog bass and Oberheim OB-X. She wrote Lucky Star herself, as a thank-you to Kamins. Holiday, originally written for the group Pure Energy, became her big breakthrough.

The first reviews were positive. In retrospect it is regarded as one of the best debut albums ever, one that made dance music popular again and gave dance-pop a standard.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Holiday and notice the drum machine and the synthesizers that carry the rhythm together: can you hear how danceable and light this sounds?
