Like a Virgin

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Like a Virgin · After her 1983 debut, Madonna wanted a sound of her own. Her label refused to let her produce herself, but did let her choose a producer. Her choice fell on Nile Rodgers, known for Chic and for David Bowie's Let's Dance. Recording took place at the Power Station in New York. Rodgers brought in his old Chic colleagues Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson. Madonna chose all the songs herself: she wrote five of them, four of those with Stephen Bray.

Rodgers was doubtful about Like a Virgin at first, but the melody stayed in his head. Material Girl was written by others. Love Don't Live Here Anymore is a cover of Rose Royce, intended as a ballad to add variety. The reviews were mixed: the production was praised, the singing criticised. Even so, the album became her first number one on the US album chart. The title track became her first number one single. The record made her a superstar.

Listening tip. Listen to Love Don't Live Here Anymore, a Rose Royce cover that deliberately works as a ballad, giving a moment of calm and variety between the dance tracks.
