One Step Beyond…

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

One Step Beyond… was Madness's debut album and was released on 19 October 1979 by Stiff Records. Recording and mixing took about three weeks. It was the first record made by the production duo Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, who would later produce more albums by the band. The title song is a piece by the Jamaican ska musician Prince Buster, with a spoken opening taken over from his song The Scorcher. The Prince is a tribute to Buster and a new recording of the group's first single. Madness, a song by Buster, is also on it.

The album reached number two on the British chart and stayed on it for more than a year. Critics called it a very enjoyable record, with its own blend of reggae and cheerful, fanfare-like madness. Together with the debut of the Specials, which came out on the same day, it made 2 Tone popular in England.
