2 Tone
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Around 1969 the first skinheads adopted the ska and reggae of Jamaican migrants. In 1979 Jerry Dammers founded the label 2 Tone in Coventry, with deliberately mixed bands that played ska with the energy of punk: The Specials, The Selecter and The Beat. Madness also began on the label. Ghost Town (1981) is about cities emptying out because of unemployment.
Listening
Listening tip. In Ghost Town, hear the slow ska rhythm on the offbeat, the minor chords and the horns that recall the Middle East.
