Light Foot
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Light Foot is an album by the alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson, recorded on 14 December 1958 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, and released by Blue Note. He plays with his quintet: the pianist Herman Foster, the bassist Peck Morrison, the drummer Jimmy Wormworth and Ray Barretto on congas. Alfred Lion was the producer.
The saxophonist is still firmly rooted in bop here, but the tempos are lower and the influence of the blues comes through more strongly. The pieces are hard bop, not straightforward bop as on earlier records. The repertoire consists of original work, such as the title song and Hog Maw, and of well-known songs such as Green Eyes and Stella By Starlight. The critics were divided. DownBeat felt the material did not fully show his abilities. AllMusic gave three stars and called the material and the playing at times uneven.
