Lou Takes Off
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Lou Takes Off is an album by the alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson, recorded on 15 December 1957 and released a year later by Blue Note. It is a sextet session: alongside him play the trumpeter Donald Byrd and the trombonist Curtis Fuller, with the pianist Sonny Clark, the bassist Jamil Nasser and the drummer Art Taylor as the rhythm section. Alfred Lion produced, Rudy Van Gelder recorded.
According to the saxophonist himself, Blue Note initially thought little of the record, nor of the new musicians. The AllMusic review sees the album as a moment of stylistic change, after which his music moved away from bop and more towards rhythm and blues. The record does not break new ground, the reviewer says, but it is a solid, swinging session with high-level playing. The album includes Sputnik, Dewey Square and Groovin' High, among others.
