Physical Graffiti
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Physical Graffiti · A first attempt to record new songs foundered in November 1973 at Headley Grange, the country house in Hampshire where the band had worked before. In January and February 1974 Led Zeppelin returned and recorded eight tracks there. The informal atmosphere left room to improvise and refine arrangements. Because the new tracks almost filled three sides of an LP, it became a double album, supplemented with seven tracks left over from earlier records.
The record covers hard rock, progressive rock, funk, blues and folk. Kashmir sounds Eastern-tinged and orchestral, Trampled Under Foot is a driving funk rocker and Bron-Yr-Aur is an instrumental piece for acoustic guitar. The release was delayed because the sleeve with die-cut windows was difficult to produce. In the United Kingdom the album went straight to number one.
