Houses of the Holy

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Houses of the Holy · In 1972 Led Zeppelin travelled with the Rolling Stones' mobile studio to Stargroves, Mick Jagger's country house in Hampshire. The guitarist Jimmy Page and the bassist John Paul Jones had set up a studio at home, so they arrived with complete compositions and arrangements. Further recording followed at Olympic Studios and Electric Lady Studios. Page produced, and Eddie Kramer was the engineer and mixed the album.

The heavy, dark blues rock sound of their earlier records gave way to a clearer, more spacious rock sound, with a sharper guitar tone. It is the group's most varied record: swing in Dancing Days, reggae in D'yer Mak'er and psychedelia in No Quarter. The Rain Song came about after George Harrison complained that the group never made ballads. The title track was left on the shelf and only appeared on a later record. The critical response was mixed, but the album became a great commercial success.
