Only by the Night

Only by the Night is the fourth studio album by Kings of Leon, released in September 2008. The writing began only a few days after the previous record, Because of the Times, came out. The producers Jacquire King and Angelo Petraglia recorded it at Blackbird Studio in Nashville. The main parts of each track were put down live on 16-track analogue tape and later worked on further in Pro Tools.

The singles became big hits. Sex on Fire reached number one in the United Kingdom and Australia, among other countries, and Use Somebody was the band's first top 10 hit in the United States. The opening track Closer stands out for a three-note bass riff, with an octave effect from an effects pedal. The critical response was divided: American sites gave low scores, while British magazines were enthusiastic. Use Somebody later won a Grammy for Record of the Year, and Q named the album the best of 2008.
