Fifth Album
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Fifth Album was released in 1965 on Elektra Records. It is Judy Collins's fourth studio album, and her fifth release overall. Jac Holzman supervised the production. The record contains traditional ballads, alongside songs by singer-songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Richard Fariña, Phil Ochs and Malvina Reynolds.
A number of the songs are topical. Ochs's In the Heat of the Summer is about the Harlem riots of 1964, and Reynolds's It Isn't Nice is a protest song. The last track is a live recording from Town Hall in New York in March 1964. Collins sings and plays guitar and keyboards, with, among others, Richard Fariña on dulcimer, John Sebastian on harmonica and Eric Weissberg as second guitarist. In this way she stands between traditional folk and the new songs of Dylan. The album reached number 69 on the Billboard chart.
