Golden Apples of the Sun

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Golden Apples of the Sun · Judy Collins's second studio album was released in 1962 on Elektra. Jac Holzman supervised the production. Collins plays guitar and keyboards, Walter Raim plays second guitar and Bill Lee bass.

The title song sets William Butler Yeats's poem The Song of Wandering Aengus to music by Collins herself. The rest consists mainly of traditional songs, from Great Selchie of Shule Skerry to Shule Aroon, supplemented with songs by Sydney Carter and Mike Settle. Bruce Eder of AllMusic hears a more attractive sound and a freer approach than on her debut, and The Washington Post called the title song brilliant. The record shows her still in her traditional folk period.

Listening tip. In Golden Apples of the Sun, listen to how the music carries the words of Yeats.
