A Maid of Constant Sorrow
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
A Maid of Constant Sorrow · On her 1961 debut album for Elektra, Judy Collins sings traditional folk songs. Her voice and guitar are sparingly accompanied by Fred Hellerman on second guitar and Erik Darling on banjo. Jac Holzman supervised the production.
The selection ranges from the Scottish Wild Mountain Thyme to Irish songs such as Bold Fenian Men and The Prickilie Bush. The title song is a variant of Man of Constant Sorrow. Many songs have the tone of a protest song, such as Ewan MacColl's Tim Evans, about a man who was wrongly hanged. In contrast there is the lively O Daddy Be Gay. The album sounds different from her later, better-known records and resembles Bob Dylan's first recordings.
