Johnny Griffin Sextet

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Johnny Griffin Sextet · Johnny Griffin Sextet was released in 1958 on Riverside and was the first album Johnny Griffin made there as a bandleader. It was recorded the day before the sessions for Way Out!. The tenor saxophonist plays here in a sextet with a rich line-up: Pepper Adams on baritone saxophone, Donald Byrd on trumpet, Kenny Drew on piano, Wilbur Ware on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums.

The album contains five tracks of between six and almost ten minutes. Wilbur Campbell wrote Stix' Trix, and What's New? is a well-known song by Bob Haggart and Johnny Burke. Dizzy Gillespie wrote Woody 'n' You, and only on that track are the baritone saxophone and the trumpet absent. John Hines contributed Johnny G.G., and Griffin himself wrote Catharsis.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Woody 'n' You, the only track without Pepper Adams and Donald Byrd, and notice how the line-up sounds smaller there.
