The Congregation
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Johnny Griffin recorded The Congregation on 23 October 1957 and it was released the following year on Blue Note. It was his last recording for that label. The tenor saxophonist works here with a quartet: Sonny Clark on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Kenny Dennis on drums. Alfred Lion produced the record and Rudy Van Gelder recorded it.
The cover was made by Reid Miles, with an illustration by Andy Warhol. The album contains six tracks, including the title song, Latin Quarter, Main Spring and the standards I'm Glad There Is You, It's You or No One and I Remember You. Scott Yanow wrote on AllMusic that Griffin is heard here in top form on an almost classic quartet record and that the record is recommended to lovers of bop.
