Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon · James Taylor recorded his third studio album between early January and late February 1971. Peter Asher produced it and Warner Bros. Records released it in April of that year. Carole King played piano and Joni Mitchell sang along on a few tracks.

The best-known song is You've Got a Friend, Taylor's version of a song by Carole King. It became his only number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned him a Grammy. The album itself stalled at number 2, because King's own album Tapestry occupied the top spot. Long Ago and Far Away became a second hit and You Can Close Your Eyes grew into a firm favourite at his concerts. Rolling Stone at first found the record dull, but after a few listens heard a peculiar weariness that belongs to the whole.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to You've Got a Friend and notice how calmly the song is built around Taylor's voice and acoustic guitar. Can you hear that he is singing someone else's song here?
