Jay Love Japan

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Jay Love Japan is J Dilla's fourth studio album and his second posthumous project. He began it, and possibly finished it, before his death in February 2006. It was intended as an instrumental EP with two guest tracks. The release was chaotic: promo versions circulated, a Japanese release from 2006 is now regarded as a promo, and the announced release dates were missed several times. On 26 June 2007 the album appeared on the iTunes Store, and in 2008 the label Operation Unknown distributed it in shops.

In 2016 the album came out on CD and LP via Dilla's estate and Vintage Vibez Music Group, remastered and in the right order, with eleven tracks in twenty-five minutes. The tracks are built on soul and pop samples: Yesterday uses Gladys Knight & the Pips, Say It The Emotions and Can't You See Diana Ross & the Supremes. Can't You See is accompanied by a series of videos.
