The Shining

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Shining is J Dilla's third studio album, released on 22 August 2006 on BBE Records. He died on 10 February 2006 and the album was not yet finished at that time. The producer Karriem Riggins finished it for his mother and, according to the source, also at the request of its maker himself; it was about 75 per cent complete. During his treatment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center he worked on both Donuts and this album, with a Boss SP-303 and a small record player for singles.

Guests include Common, Busta Rhymes, D'Angelo, Madlib and Black Thought. The closing track Won't Do is the only track on which he raps alone. So Far to Go is a vocal version of Bye from Donuts, intended as a remix of Go! by Common. The reviews were generally positive. An instrumental version followed shortly after the album.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Won't Do, the closing track, and notice that here he alone raps, without guests.
