The Golden D

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Golden D · Two years after his first solo record, Graham Coxon made a second album in 2000, which stood further from Blur than his debut. He recorded all the instruments himself, and also produced and mixed the record himself. The guitars and the vocals sound heavier and even rawer than before. Only Keep Hope Alive resembles the sound of The Sky Is Too High. There are two covers on it, Fame and Fortune and That's When I Reach for My Revolver, both by the post-punk band Mission of Burma. The title is a joke about Coxon's favourite guitar chord.

Reactions were mixed. A reviewer at AllMusic heard mainly hard and fast rock and thought of Sonic Youth and the Sex Pistols. The sleeve shows part of Coxon's own painting The Blue Dog.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Fame and Fortune and notice how raw the guitars and vocals sound. This song is a cover of Mission of Burma.
