The Sky Is Too High

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Sky Is Too High · In August 1998, Graham Coxon, guitarist of Blur, released his first solo album on his own label Transcopic Records. He wrote, recorded and produced all the music himself. Most of it consists of acoustic songs with a lo-fi sound, here and there supplemented with electric guitar and drums. In this way the record resembles Blur songs such as Miss America and You're So Great, one of the few songs on which Coxon himself sings.

The Guardian felt that the album could not match the work of Syd Barrett, but praised Coxon's gift for playing in a way that is messy and yet attractive. On the sleeve there is still a crossed-out track titled pause, but it is not on the record: there are eleven tracks.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Mornin' Blues and notice how simple and homely it sounds, in keeping with the lo-fi character of the record.
