Portfolio

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Portfolio is the debut album of the Jamaican singer Grace Jones, released in 1977 on Island Records. Earlier she had worked as a model in Paris and New York and had released a few singles in 1975 and 1976 without a breakthrough. The album was recorded and mixed at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, with the disco producer Tom Moulton, with whom she made three albums.

The first side of the LP is a continuous disco medley of three songs from Broadway musicals: Send in the Clowns, What I Did for Love and Tomorrow. Side two opens with her own performance of Édith Piaf's La Vie en rose, which became her first big hit and reached the top five in France and Italy. Sorry and That's the Trouble were her first own songs. I Need a Man became a number one dance hit in the United States. The reviews were mixed: Billboard thought it perfect to dance to, while AllMusic called it more a producer's record.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the medley on the first side and notice how the songs from the musicals run into one another without a break, in disco style.
