Muse

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Muse was released on 4 September 1979 on Island Records. It is Grace Jones's third album and the last of her disco trilogy with the producer Tom Moulton, which began in 1977 with Portfolio. As on the previous records, the first side is a continuous medley of four songs, linked by a story about someone who has sinned. The second side consists of separate disco songs. The Icelandic keyboard player Thor Baldursson, who did most of the arranging and sings a duet with her on Suffer, had earlier worked in Munich with, among others, Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder.

The record came out in the year of the anti-disco backlash. The album and the only single, On Your Knees, were largely ignored, and Muse is regarded as her lost album. Billboard called the music, vocals and production top-notch, and Cash Box praised the sophisto-disco sound and Baldursson's band. The Quietus later called it the best of her first three records.
