The Individualism of Gil Evans

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Individualism of Gil Evans · The Individualism of Gil Evans was released in 1964 on Verve and presents the pianist and arranger Gil Evans at the head of a big band. The recordings were made in New York and Englewood Cliffs, spread over 1963 and 1964. The programme consists of five originals, two of them co-written with Miles Davis, and compositions by Kurt Weill, Bob Dorough, John Lewis and Willie Dixon.

The original LP contained four pieces. The 1988 CD added five more, including Willie Dixon's Spoonful. The album earned a Grammy nomination. AllMusic gave it four stars out of five and regretted that the arranger did not record more in this period.

Listening tip. Listen to Kurt Weill's The Barbara Song and notice how an existing composition is worked out here as a big band piece.
