Gil Evans & Ten

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Gil Evans & Ten · Gil Evans & Ten was released in 1957 on the Prestige label and is the first album as bandleader by the pianist, conductor, arranger and composer Gil Evans. It also came out under the titles Big Stuff and Gil Evans + Ten. The recording took place in September and October 1957.

The programme consists of arrangements of five standards and one original composition, Jambangle, with, among others, Steve Lacy, Lee Konitz, Jimmy Cleveland and Paul Chambers. The arranger uses the voices of this unusual combination of musicians in an inventive way. According to AllMusic, it is a good introduction to his work, with pieces ranging from Lead Belly to Leonard Bernstein. The Penguin Guide to Jazz calls it a record that stands in the shadow of later sessions, but that offers much to enjoy.

Listening tip. Listen to Big Stuff and notice how the different horns give the arrangement their own colour.
