Fenix
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Fenix contains recordings from 1971 and was released on the Flying Dutchman label. Gato Barbieri, the Argentinian saxophonist and composer, plays tenor saxophone and is supported by a rich rhythm section: Lonnie Liston Smith on piano and electric piano, Ron Carter on electric bass and Lenny White on drums. Gene Golden and Naná Vasconcelos provide conga, bongo and berimbau, and on the opening track Joe Beck plays electric guitar.
The repertoire is international. Besides Tupac Amaru by Barbieri himself, there are Carnavalito, Falsa Bahiana, El Día Que Me Quieras, El Arriero and Bahia, pieces by South American composers. Robert Christgau wrote in 1971 that it was the first jazz he had enjoyed playing often since Miles Davis's In a Silent Way. AllMusic calls it an engaging album for lovers of rhythmic free jazz.
