The Groovy Sound Of Music
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Groovy Sound Of Music · RCA made this album because the label had promised the composer Richard Rodgers that artists from its own catalogue would record songs from The Sound of Music, during the negotiations over the 1965 film soundtrack. There were two sessions in New York in December 1964. At the first, the vibraphonist Gary Burton played in a jazz sextet, and also played Edelweiss solo. The second featured a small orchestra under the direction of Gary McFarland, who also arranged.
The vibraphonist was unhappy with it later. He found McFarland's arrangements conventional and uninspiring and was embarrassed by the title and the sleeve. After his complaint and the threat of leaving the label, he was given more say. The reviewer Ken Dryden, on the other hand, found the album a treat, because jazz musicians had done little with this musical, apart from My Favorite Things.
