The Groovy Sound Of Music · RCA nam dit album op omdat het label aan componist Richard Rodgers had beloofd dat artiesten van de eigen catalogus liedjes uit The Sound of Music zouden opnemen, tijdens de onderhandelingen over de filmsoundtrack van 1965. Er waren twee sessies in New York in december 1964. Bij de eerste speelde vibrafonist Gary Burton in een jazzsextet en daarnaast Edelweiss solo. Bij de tweede hoorde een klein orkest onder leiding van Gary McFarland, die ook arrangeerde.

De vibrafonist was er later ongelukkig mee. Hij vond de arrangementen van McFarland conventioneel en weinig inspirerend en schaamde zich voor de titel en de hoes. Na zijn klacht en de dreiging het label te verlaten kreeg hij meer inspraak. Recensent Ken Dryden vond het album juist een traktatie, omdat jazzmusici weinig met deze musical deden, afgezien van My Favorite Things.
