Solid Gold
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Solid Gold is the second album by the British post-punk band Gang of Four and was released in 1981. Two songs, Outside the Trains Don't Run on Time and He'd Send in the Army, are re-recordings of songs that had previously appeared on a British single. The line-up consisted of Andy Gill on guitar, Jon King on vocals, Dave Allen on bass and Hugo Burnham on drums.
The guitar sounds scratchy and feverish and breaks through the mix at key moments. The lyrics are about the personal politics of consumption and desire, as in What We All Want, and about broader issues such as American culture in Cheeseburger and Thatcher's policies. The album was well received, although many critics found it less consistent than the debut, Entertainment!. Pitchfork placed it at number 24 among the best records of the 1980s. Uncut called it their best.
