Hot Rats
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Hot Rats · In the summer of 1969, Frank Zappa began work on his second solo album, while already thinking of disbanding his group, the Mothers of Invention. That happened in August. Only the multi-instrumentalist Ian Underwood played on it as a Mother. The others included the bassist Shuggie Otis, who was fifteen at the time, and the violinists Don Sugarcane Harris and Jean-Luc Ponty.
It was recorded on a home-built 16-track recorder in Hollywood. Thanks to overdubs, a handful of musicians sound like a large ensemble, and for the first time in rock the drums were given a stereo sound. Five of the six pieces are instrumental, jazz-inspired and full of solos, very different from his earlier satirical records. Only Willie The Pimp has vocals, by Captain Beefheart. Zappa himself called the album a movie for your ears. It is dedicated to his newborn son Dweezil.
