Chunga’s Revenge
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Chunga’s Revenge · Chunga's Revenge was released on 23 October 1970 on Bizarre, Frank Zappa's own label, and distributed by Reprise. It is his third solo album and the first on which Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan play, two former members of the Turtles who became known as Flo & Eddie. The recordings ran from July 1969 to August 1970 and took place in various studios in the United States and London. Twenty Small Cigars comes from the Hot Rats sessions of 1969.
The material is eclectic: a guitar jam, a bluesy number, a jazz interlude and an avant-garde live improvisation. The Clap is a short percussion piece on which Zappa is the only musician. The vocal numbers are about sex and groupies. A French reviewer praised the versatile guitarist with his wah-wah pedal. The writer Ben Watson heard Zappa's most Oriental-sounding guitar in Transylvania Boogie.
