Cosmogramma

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Cosmogramma is the third album by Steven Ellison, who makes music under the name Flying Lotus. He began recording in October 2008 in his apartment in Los Angeles, right after his previous album and the death of his mother. The title comes from a misunderstanding: his great-aunt Alice Coltrane spoke of earthly life as a cosmic drama, and he heard cosmogramma.

The album was released on 3 May 2010 on Warp Records. Ellison used a laptop, a sampler and a drum machine, but also live instruments such as harp, bass, strings and saxophone. Guests include Thom Yorke, Thundercat, Ravi Coltrane and Laura Darlington. The music is dense, layered and versatile. The critical response was very enthusiastic and the album appeared on many year-end lists.
