The Need of Love
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Need of Love is Earth, Wind & Fire's second studio album and was released in November 1971 on Warner Bros. Records. Joe Wissert produced the record, which was recorded at Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood. It became the group's last album for Warner Bros. until Millennium in 1993. Jean Carne was among those who sang along, and Everything Is Everything is an adaptation of the Donny Hathaway song.
The nine-piece band mixes jazzy instrumental pieces with group singing and chanting, big band sounds, free passages and solid soul rhythms. According to the Chicago Sun-Times critic this sounds melodic and enchanting, and the mixture has a sound of its own. AllMusic found the record more abstract in design than the debut, but with fewer good songs. Billboard already saw potential in the group behind the singer Sherry Scott. I Think About Lovin' You reached number 44 on the soul chart.
