Last Days and Time

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Last Days and Time is Earth, Wind & Fire's third album and their first for Columbia. It was released in October 1972. Joe Wissert produced it at Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood. Maurice White played drums and kalimba, Verdine White bass, and Philip Bailey sang and played congas. Ronnie Laws played flute and saxophone.

The record is full of covers: Make It with You by Bread and Where Have All the Flowers Gone by Pete Seeger. Between them come short interludes. The album sounds eclectic and mixes soul, funk, pop and jazzy experiments. William Ruhlmann of AllMusic wrote that here the group had recorded almost everything that Motown, Sly & the Family Stone and Weather Report had done. The single Mom reached number 39 on the Cashbox R&B chart. Producer Jimmy Jam became a fan of the group through this album, and Nas drew inspiration from the cover.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Where Have All the Flowers Gone and notice how a 1960s folk song takes on a soul sound here through Philip Bailey's singing and the band.
