Head to the Sky
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Head to the Sky was released in May 1973 as Earth, Wind & Fire's fourth album. Joe Wissert produced it, with bandleader Maurice White as musical director. It was recorded at Clover Recorders in Hollywood. Besides guitars, organ and piano, a sitar, a clarinet and a kalimba can be heard. On Zanzibar, guest musician Oscar Brashear plays trumpet.
The album mixes soul, funk and jazz. Evil became a modest hit and Keep Your Head to the Sky also reached the soul chart. The newspaper Pittsburgh Press noticed Jessica Cleaves's soft vocals, and Billboard thought the band did everything well. The album reached number 2 on the Billboard Top Soul Albums chart and later went platinum. According to AllMusic the group still had mainly a cult following, but that changed, and when success came in 1974 and 1975, new fans discovered how good this record already was. Isaac Hayes called it one of their five essential records.
