Seven and the Ragged Tiger

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Seven and the Ragged Tiger is Duran Duran's third studio album and was released on 21 November 1983. After the success of Rio, the band lived outside Britain for a year to avoid paying tax. Recording ran from April to October 1983 in France, the Caribbean and Australia, with Alex Sadkin, Ian Little and the band as producers. The sessions went badly: there was little new material and tensions in the group were rising.

It is a new wave and synth-pop record in which synthesizers set the tone. Singer Simon Le Bon described the album as an adventure story about a small commando team. It yielded three singles: Union of the Snake, New Moon on Monday and a remix of The Reflex by Nile Rodgers, which reached number one in Britain and the United States. Critics were at first unkind, but the album was a great success and was the last studio record with the original line-up until 2004.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to The Reflex and notice how the synthesizers and the rhythm together create the drive of the song.
