Notorious

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Notorious was released on 24 November 1986 and sounded different from Duran Duran's earlier records. The band made the album with producer Nile Rodgers of Chic, and the sound became funkier. Drummer Roger Taylor and guitarist Andy Taylor had already left by the time of its release. Singer Simon Le Bon, keyboard player Nick Rhodes and bassist John Taylor remained as a trio. Guitarist Warren Cuccurullo joined during the mixing and played on a few tracks, and drummer Steve Ferrone also played on the album.

The title track was a great success: number seven in the UK and number two in the United States. The album sold less than earlier records. Critics were divided, although some praised the band's growing maturity and the production.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen in Skin Trade to Nile Rodgers's slim guitar and the soulful vocals. Notice how funky it sounds for a group that became famous with synth-pop.
