Side by Side
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Side by Side is billed as an album by Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges, but in reality it is Hodges, for many years the alto saxophonist in Ellington's orchestra, who leads. Ellington plays on only three tracks. The rest was recorded in August 1958, with Billy Strayhorn at the piano. The record follows Back to Back, on which the two had played the blues.
Hodges is always in front, surrounded by great names from jazz: Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, Harry Edison and the drummer Jo Jones. The material ranges from Stompy Jones and Squeeze Me to short, relaxed pieces such as Ruint and Bend One. The album has remained available ever since its release.
