Thank Me Later

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Thank Me Later · After the success of the mixtape So Far Gone and the song Best I Ever Had, Drake signed with Universal Motown. From 2009 to 2010 he worked on his debut album, at dozens of places from Toronto to Honolulu, and sometimes even on a tour bus. His regular producers 40 and Boi-1da made most of the music. The sound is slow and atmospheric, with sombre synthesizers, sparse beats and soft arrangements. Drake raps and sings quietly about doubt, insecurity, love and his first experiences of fame. In Fireworks he mentions his parents' divorce, and in Karaoke keyboards from the 1980s are heard.

The album was long awaited and went to number one on the American chart. Critics appreciated the personal themes and compared the record with 808s & Heartbreak by Kanye West. The album received a Grammy nomination.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Karaoke and notice the keyboards, which sound like 1980s pop, while Drake sings about the effort love takes.
