Take Care

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

After Thank Me Later in 2010, Drake felt dissatisfied with the coherence of his debut album. He considered it rushed and called his second album Take Care because he could now take his time. He worked intensively with his regular producer Noah 40 Shebib, who did most of the production, with contributions from, among others, T-Minus, Boi-1da and Jamie xx of The xx. The album was mainly recorded in Toronto and came out on 15 November 2011.

It sounds slow, sensual and dark, with minimalist R&B, and Drake alternates between singing and rapping. The lyrics deal with fame, love, money and friendship, full of bravado and vulnerability. Guests include The Weeknd, Rihanna and Kendrick Lamar. Despite a leak nine days before release, the album topped the Billboard 200. Critics praised the spacious production and the emotional themes. It won the Grammy for Best Rap Album.
