808s & Heartbreak
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
808s & Heartbreak is Kanye West's fourth studio album, released on 24 November 2008. He recorded it in about three weeks, in September and October 2008, in Burbank, California and in Honolulu, Hawaii. The occasion was the death of his mother Donda in November 2007 and the end of his engagement to Alexis Phifer in April 2008. He was also struggling with his new pop-star status.
He broke with his earlier hip hop: he mostly sings instead of rapping, with Auto-Tune over a bare, electronic accompaniment with a lot of minor keys and the Roland TR-808 drum machine. The title refers to it. The album was about loss and heartbreak. The public was at first taken aback, but the reviews were positive. Critics see it as one of his most influential records for hip hop, pop and R&B.
