Graduation

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Graduation is Kanye West's third studio album, released on 11 September 2007 on Def Jam and Roc-A-Fella. He recorded it between 2005 and 2007 in New York and Los Angeles and produced most of it himself. After a tour with U2, he wanted to make big songs for stadiums. He drew inspiration from house and indie rock, used layered synthesizers and rapped more smoothly. In doing so he left the soulful sound of his earlier records behind. He left out skits, because in his view they weakened the listening experience.

The lyrics sketch a mixed feeling about his fame, with messages of triumph. Stronger was an international hit and reached number 1 on the American Hot 100. The album received praise for its production and won a Grammy for Best Rap Album. It was released on the same day as 50 Cent's Curtis.
