Late Registration

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Late Registration · After the success of The College Dropout, Kanye West did not want to make the same record again. His sped-up soul samples were widely imitated by other rappers. For his second album he spent a year working in Hollywood and New York with Jon Brion. Together they built a richer, orchestral sound, with an ensemble of twenty musicians and instruments rarely heard in hip hop, such as a celesta, a harpsichord and Chinese bells. West drew inspiration from Fiona Apple and Portishead. He originally wrote Gold Digger for another rapper, after which Jamie Foxx added the vocals from a Ray Charles song.

The record received glowing reviews and was seen as a step forward. It entered the American chart at number one and earned West eight Grammy nominations.
