Random Access Memories

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Random Access Memories · In 2008 Daft Punk began work on new songs in Paris, but the duo were dissatisfied with the sampling and looping of earlier albums. After the Tron: Legacy soundtrack they chose live musicians. Through Chris Caswell a group of experienced session musicians was brought together: we wanted to do what we did with machines and samplers, but with people, said Thomas Bangalter. The album was released on 17 May 2013 and was recorded in secret between 2008 and 2012 in studios in California, New York and Paris.

It is a tribute to American music of the late 1970s and early 1980s. It blends disco, progressive rock and pop, with contributions from, among others, Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder, Pharrell Williams and Chilly Gonzales. Only the closing track Contact contains a sample. Get Lucky reached number 1 in more than thirty countries. The album won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2014.
