She’s So Unusual
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
She’s So Unusual · She's So Unusual is Cyndi Lauper's first solo album and was released in October 1983 on Portrait Records. Earlier she had sung in Blue Angel, a band whose debut album was a commercial failure. Bankruptcy followed, and she kept working in shops and performing in clubs in New York. There she met manager David Wolff, who helped her get a contract with Portrait.
The music is mainly new wave, with influences of synth-pop and pop music. Six tracks were released as singles. Girls Just Want to Have Fun became a worldwide hit, and Time After Time became her first number 1 in America. With She Bop and All Through the Night she became the first woman to have four singles from one album in the American top five. Critics praised her distinctive voice. Lauper won two Grammys, including Best New Artist, and the album was later added to the American National Recording Registry.
