True Colors
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
True Colors · After the enormous success of She's So Unusual, Cyndi Lauper wanted to approach her next record differently. She had first thought of Rick Chertoff as producer, but that collaboration went badly. She therefore made the album herself with Lennie Petze and wrote most of the songs. The album was released on 15 September 1986 on Portrait Records. The songs were meant to encourage listeners to love themselves a little more.
The title song True Colors, written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, is the best-known track and was covered by many artists. Change of Heart and What's Going On, with Chuck D, also reached the American top twenty. The album reached number 4 on the Billboard 200 and earned two Grammy nominations. The reviews were mostly favourable, although some felt the singer sounded less distinctive than on her debut. About seven million copies have been sold.
