Places by Brad Mehldau was released on 5 September 2000 on Warner Bros. Mehldau recorded the album in January and March 2000 at Mad Hatter Studio in Los Angeles and produced it himself. Bernie Kirsch was the engineer. All the pieces are by Mehldau. He plays piano. Larry Grenadier (bass) and Jorge Rossy (drums) join him on six of the thirteen tracks. Mehldau plays the other pieces alone.

Each piece is named after a place, such as 'Madrid', 'Amsterdam', 'Paris' and 'Schloss Elmau'. Mehldau said that James Joyce's Ulysses influenced the structure: the album is cyclical, with a theme that opens the album and returns at the end. AllMusic gave the record four and a half stars. The Penguin Guide to Jazz gave it three stars. The reviewer David Adler called it a concept album.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to 'Los Angeles' as the opener and hear the theme again in the final track, where the trio takes up the opening theme once more.
