Elegiac Cycle

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Elegiac Cycle is a solo piano album by Brad Mehldau, released in 1999 by Warner Bros. and produced by himself. For its design he drew inspiration from James Joyce's Ulysses. The album is built cyclically, with a theme that opens the record and returns at the end, just as Odysseus's journey was a circle.

A musical effect also comes from Joyce. In Memory's Tricks, Mehldau silently holds down the keys of a motif with one hand and improvises other lines with the other. The motif then sounds softly on in the vibrations of the soundboard. The pieces are all his own and bear titles such as Elegy for William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg and Goodbye Storyteller. In 2011 an edition containing all the notes of the album was published in France.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Memory's Tricks and notice how a motif keeps sounding in the background while other lines are played over it.
