Introducing Brad Mehldau

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Introducing Brad Mehldau · This album was released in 1995 on Warner Bros. and has nine tracks: a mix of standards and original compositions, produced by Matt Pierson. The pianist plays with two different trios. On the first five tracks Larry Grenadier plays bass and Jorge Rossy drums, on the last four Christian McBride and Brian Blade. In 2023 he wrote that you hear two records in one: his own voice, coloured by musicians who already had a sound of their own.

Alongside his own work such as Angst, Young Werther, London Blues and Say Goodbye there are pieces by Rodgers and Hammerstein, John Coltrane with Countdown, Duke Ellington with Prelude to a Kiss and Cole Porter with From This Moment On. AllMusic gave four stars and called it a good start to what was to become a prolific career.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Countdown, a composition by John Coltrane and, at just over four minutes, the shortest track on the album, and notice what the bass and drums do around the piano melody.
