Largo
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Largo was released in 2002 on Warner Bros. and is an album by pianist and composer Brad Mehldau. It is a departure from his earlier straight-ahead jazz records. Instead it sounds more experimental and more pop-influenced, with many session musicians. Jon Brion produced and was his main collaborator, but the pianist wrote all the arrangements himself.
The music includes chamber-music-like woodwinds and brass, and percussion with hip-hop and drum-and-bass rhythms. He also plays electric keyboards. According to the reviewers, his piano remains the centre. His playing stays a little ominous and sad, but he plays more lightly and his melodies and harmonies are simpler than before. The Guardian gave the record four stars. According to AllMusic, it shows how open the pianist is to new sounds, although his playing remains intelligent and somewhat cerebral. In 2023 the album was released on vinyl for the first time.
