Highway Rider
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Highway Rider was released in 2010 on Nonesuch Records as a double album. It was Brad Mehldau's second collaboration with producer Jon Brion, after Largo. The pianist plays here with his regular trio, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard, but also with saxophonist Joshua Redman and drummer Matt Chamberlain.
The album is conceived on a broader scale than an ordinary piano trio album. A chamber orchestra conducted by Dan Coleman plays on some of the tracks. Besides piano, there are also pump organ, orchestra bells and a Yamaha CS-80, an analogue synthesizer. The result is a long series of pieces in which jazz, orchestral sounds and studio colours flow into one another.
